We had to have a liver transplant done for my daughter Jenna (in June 1997) when she was 6 months old, and we had it done in San Francisco even though we live in New York. The transplant was really hard. In fact, the doctor said, “Someday I’ll tell you how hard it was,” and he hasn’t told me anything yet.
Anyway, a letter found its way to us from the Bronx all the way to San Francisco in the hospital. The letter was from Mother Teresa. It was sent to us through a friend who knew her. It had arrived after the transplant, but I looked at the date of the letter and she had actually written it on the day the transplant had taken place. The idea that she had actually been thinking of us and praying for us on that very day was a little eerie and kind of amazing. We are not a religious family, but having her pray for us was really special.
