Today, we highlight the inspiring story of Juliana and her family, a testament to the power of hope, medical innovation, and the profound impact of organ donation.

Juliana's journey began before she was even born. Diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome at just 20 weeks gestation, her future was uncertain. At the same time, her mother was bravely battling breast cancer, receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Despite these overwhelming circumstances, Juliana's family remained steadfast in their hope for a brighter future.

Born four weeks early at Texas Children's Hospital, Juliana faced heart failure and was deemed unsuitable for corrective surgery. At just 11 days old, she was listed for a heart transplant. Miraculously, a perfect heart became available only five days later. With only a 50% chance of surviving the transplant surgery, Juliana's family held onto hope. Against the odds, she emerged from surgery successfully and was discharged six weeks later.

The journey didn't end there. Juliana spent the next year dedicated to weekly physical and occupational therapy, along with frequent visits to the transplant clinic. Her resilience and the unwavering support of her transplant team paid off. By 14 months old, Juliana was walking and embracing life to the fullest.

Now 10 years old, and soon to be 11 on April 9th, Juliana is a vibrant young girl with a zest for life. She loves spending time at the beach, exploring the mountains, riding bikes, shopping, skiing, and playing Roblox. Her adventurous spirit and joyful energy are a testament to the incredible journey she has been on.

Juliana's mother shares, "I am so proud of Juliana's kindness. She truly wants the best for others and to help people, especially other kids like her. She has participated in research studies at Texas Children's Hospital, been the local hero for Children's Miracle Network, and shared her story numerous times to raise money and awareness for her hospital. Juliana is committed to taking care of her donor (Christopher's) heart for the rest of her life."

Looking to the future, Juliana dreams of giving back to her community and living a long, full life. She is dedicated to taking care of her donor heart, ensuring she can achieve her dreams. Among those dreams is the hope of becoming a mom someday, sharing her love and kindness with the next generation.

A few years after her transplant, Juliana's family had the opportunity to meet her donor family, forging a deep and meaningful connection. This bond was beautifully celebrated when Juliana participated in her donor's big sister's quinceañera in Mississippi, a day she describes as one of the best of her life.

Throughout this journey, the support and expertise of their medical team have been invaluable. "We loved our main transplant cardiologist, Dr. William Dreyer, and Dr. Joey Spinner. Our transplant coordinator, Kim, is also amazing!" Juliana's family expresses their deep gratitude for the dedicated professionals who have been by their side every step of the way.

Juliana's story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of organ donation and the strength of the human spirit. At Transplant Families, we are honored to support families like Juliana's, who inspire us every day with their resilience and gratitude. Together, we continue to advocate for organ donation and support those navigating the transplant journey.

In the words of Juliana’s mom, Riki: “Take care of yourself so that you are strong enough to help care for your child. It's a long journey, but can be full of beautiful moments. Be grateful, trust your team, ask questions, and be an advocate for your child!”
