STEVENS POINT — When the students at the Stevens Point charter school McKinley Center learned that one of their classmates needed a second heart transplant, they wasted no time trying to help out.
Four days later, the students had raised $6,614 for 6-year-old Jayden Davy, a student in kindergarten teacher Kristine Zasada’s class.
“Everybody in the whole school rallied together,” Zasada said. “I was just overwhelmed. It’s too hard to put into words.”
Jayden was born with a heart defect and already has undergone multiple surgeries, including a previous heart transplant, in attempts to correct the issue, according to Michelle Dobeck, the boy’s mother. Now, Jayden is hospitalized at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee waiting for another heart transplant.
