Transplant Fitness Challenge: March Into Fitness

Writer: Jennifer HenzeJennifer Henze

This month-long challenge is designed to encourage movement, build strength, and promote a healthy lifestyle tailored to the unique needs of transplant recipients.

Why Fitness Matters After Transplant

Regular physical activity can help transplant recipients improve cardiovascular health, boost mood, maintain a healthy weight, and enhance overall quality of life. However, it’s essential to take a safe and gradual approach to exercise, considering any medical restrictions and personal fitness levels.

Beginner Workout Routine for Pediatric Transplant Patients

Physical activity is just as important for pediatric transplant patients as it is for adults. A safe and fun approach to fitness can help kids build strength, improve mobility, and boost confidence. Always consult your child’s transplant team before beginning any new workout program.

Warm-Up (5-10 Minutes)

  • Gentle stretching with playful movements (reach for the sky, touch toes)

  • Arm circles and shoulder rolls

  • Light marching in place or slow walking

Fun Workouts for Kids

  1. Casual Exercise - Yoga, Walking or Hiking

  2. Organized Sports - Soccer or Softball

  3. Dance Classes - Ballet or Tap Dancing

  4. Martial Arts - Karate or Tae Kwon Do

  5. Water Sports - Swimming or Diving

  6. Club Sports - Same as organized sports but for kids that are very interested in developing their skills or being competitive.

  7. High School Sports (get your transplant team's permission if your child wishes to be in contact sports as they will need clearance) - Track & Field, Cross Country, Swimming, Soccer, Baseball, Volleyball, Basketball, Football, or Wrestling.

Cool-Down (5-10 Minutes)

  • Deep breathing exercises

  • Gentle stretching, focusing on arms, legs, and back

Tips for Keeping Kids Active & Healthy

  • Make it Fun: Turn exercise into a game or adventure to keep kids engaged.

  • Encourage Daily Movement: Small activities like walking, stretching, or playing outdoors add up.

  • Stay Hydrated: Ensure kids drink enough water, especially after activity.

  • Listen to Their Energy Levels: Rest when needed and avoid overexertion.

  • Use Protection as Necessary: Use appropriate headgear for contact sports. Kidney recipients may want to consider a kidney shield for any organized sports.

  • Create a Routine: Consistency helps children build healthy habits over time.

  • Celebrate Achievements: Reward small milestones to keep motivation high.
